How to Choose the Right Table Lamp for Every Room

A good table lamp does far more than fill an empty corner of a sideboard. It softens the edges of a room in the evening, gives you light exactly where you need it, and adds a pool of warmth that a ceiling light alone can never quite manage.

The good news is that picking the right table lamp is less about luck and more about a handful of simple measurements and questions. This guide walks you through height, shade, bulb and style, then looks at what works best in each room of the house, so you can buy with confidence.

Start with what the lamp needs to do

Before you think about colour or material, decide on the lamp's main job. Most table lamps fall into one of three roles, and the role shapes almost every other decision.

  • Task lighting: focused light for reading, writing or close work. You will want a brighter bulb and a shade that directs light downwards onto the surface.
  • Ambient lighting: a gentle, general glow that makes a room feel inviting. A fabric or frosted shade that diffuses light evenly works well here.
  • Accent or decorative lighting: a lamp that is as much a piece of décor as a light source, often placed on a shelf, console or windowsill to create a focal point.

Many lamps do a bit of everything, but knowing which role matters most helps you avoid buying a decorative piece where you really needed a reading light.

Getting the height and scale right

Proportion is the single most common thing people get wrong with table lamps. A lamp that is too small looks lost; one that is too tall casts glare straight into your eyes.

The eye-level rule

When you are sitting next to the lamp, the bottom edge of the shade should sit roughly at eye level. This means you see the soft glow of the shade rather than the bare bulb underneath. For a typical sofa or armchair, that usually places the bottom of the shade around 100–110 cm (39–43 in) from the floor.

To work out the lamp height you need, measure the height of the table and subtract it from that figure. For example, if your side table is 55 cm (22 in) tall, a lamp of around 50–60 cm (20–24 in) is likely to be about right.

Balancing lamp and furniture

  • The lamp should not be much taller than the table it stands on is high. A combined height of table and lamp of around 145–160 cm (57–63 in) suits most living rooms.
  • The widest part of the shade should be narrower than the table top, so the lamp does not overhang or risk being knocked.
  • On a large console or sideboard, a taller lamp of 65–80 cm (26–31 in) or a matching pair helps the piece feel anchored rather than sparse.

Choosing the right shade

The shade controls where the light goes and how it feels. It is worth giving it as much thought as the base.

  • Opaque shades (dark fabric, metal) push light up and down in focused beams, which is ideal for reading and creates a dramatic, cosy mood.
  • Translucent shades (linen, cotton, paper, frosted glass) let light glow through the sides, giving a softer, more even ambient light.
  • Drum and cylinder shades feel modern and spread light fairly evenly.
  • Tapered or empire shades direct more light downwards and suit traditional rooms.
  • Dome and mushroom shapes cast a lovely downward glow and work well on smaller tables.

As a rough guide, the shade's height should be around two-thirds of the base height, and its diameter should be close to the height of the base.

Bulbs, brightness and colour temperature

Even the most beautiful lamp will feel wrong with the wrong bulb. Two numbers matter: lumens (brightness) and Kelvin (colour of the light).

  • For ambient light, around 400–450 lumens (roughly equivalent to an old 40 W bulb) is usually plenty.
  • For reading and task light, aim for 450–800 lumens, depending on how close the lamp sits to you.
  • Colour temperature: 2700–3000K gives the warm, relaxing glow most people want in living rooms and bedrooms. Around 4000K is crisper and better suited to a home office or workspace.

If you are unsure which colour of light suits each space, our guide to warm white vs cool white light explains the differences in more detail. A dimmable bulb, or a lamp with a built-in dimmer, gives you the most flexibility from day to evening.

Choosing a table lamp for each room

Living room

Living rooms benefit from several lamps placed at different points, rather than one bright light. Aim for lamps at either end of a sofa or beside an armchair you read in, plus one on a console or shelf to lift a darker corner. Warm, diffused shades work beautifully here, and lamps of varying heights help draw the eye around the room rather than lining everything up at one level.

Bedroom

Bedside lamps need to be easy to reach from bed and gentle enough not to dazzle you or a partner. The bottom of the shade should sit around shoulder height when you are sitting up against the headboard, roughly 50–60 cm (20–24 in) above the mattress. Look for a switch within easy reach, or a touch or dimmer control. Our bedside and desk lamps are designed with exactly this in mind.

Home office and study

For a desk, choose a lamp that throws light down onto your work surface without reflecting off a screen. Position it on the opposite side to your writing hand to avoid casting shadows, and pick a neutral white of around 3500–4000K for focused tasks. An adjustable arm or a downward-facing shade is especially useful.

Hallway and console tables

A lamp on a hall table makes a welcoming first impression and is far kinder than a bright overhead light when you come home late. Look for a slim base and a shade that will not overhang the edge.

Kitchen and dining areas

A small lamp on a kitchen shelf, dresser or open worktop corner adds softness to a room that is often lit by functional ceiling lights. Without a socket nearby, cordless table lamps are a practical choice, as they can move from room to room.

Picking a style and material

Once the practical choices are settled, style is where you can have some fun:

  • Ceramic and stoneware bases bring texture and colour, and suit everything from rustic to contemporary schemes.
  • Glass feels light and airy, and works well in smaller rooms where you do not want a heavy visual presence.
  • Rattan and natural fibres add warmth and a relaxed, coastal or Scandinavian feel, often casting pretty patterned shadows.
  • Metal finishes such as brass, chrome or matt black lean modern or industrial.

If natural textures appeal, our ceramic, glass and rattan lamps are a good place to start. For a lamp that doubles as a statement object, take a look at our sculptural table lamps, which are designed to look striking even when switched off.

Quick checklist before you buy

  1. Decide the lamp's main job: task, ambient or decorative.
  2. Measure your table height and aim for the shade bottom at seated eye level.
  3. Check the shade is narrower than the table top.
  4. Choose a shade material that suits the light you want: opaque for focus, translucent for glow.
  5. Pick a bulb of around 2700–3000K for living spaces, 4000K for work areas.
  6. Consider cord length and socket position, or go cordless.
  7. Make sure the switch is easy to reach from where you will be sitting.

Frequently asked questions

How tall should a table lamp be?

Most table lamps are between 45 and 75 cm (18–30 in) tall. The right height depends on your table: aim for the bottom of the shade to sit roughly at eye level when you are seated, which usually means the table and lamp together measure around 145–160 cm (57–63 in).

What size lamp shade do I need?

A useful guide is a shade height of about two-thirds of the base height, with a diameter roughly equal to the height of the base. The shade should also be narrower than the table it sits on, so it does not overhang.

What bulb is best for a bedside lamp?

A warm white bulb of 2700K at around 400–450 lumens suits most bedside lamps. It is bright enough to read by but gentle enough to help you wind down. A dimmable bulb gives you extra control late at night.
